The first time I laid eyes on Blake Lively, she was in a skirt so tiny it could have doubled as a turban. The occasion: Chanel’s resort 2012 show in the south of France. Lively’s impossibly long legs did a great job running distraction, but the skirt flirted with disaster. Another starlet would have been eaten alive by the “What Was She Thinking?” tabloid sharpshooters, but not Lively, whose ohmygod good looks—those legs! that hair! that body!—give her free reign to strut what the rest of us only dare to imagine. At 24, she is a red-hot bombshell who knows her power. Who else but she could play the shared girlfriend of two drug dealers (Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch) in Oliver Stone’s violent new film, Savages? Lively’s gritty performance in The Town was merely a prelude to this dark thriller, sure to crown her one of Hollywood’s top leading ladies.
Always a head-turner, Lively insists she styles herself—no small thing in Hollywood, where celebrity stylists can exert as much influence as top-tier agents. Skeptical, I pressed her on that issue, prompting Lively to open up to me about her deep love of fashion. She was decidedly less forthcoming about her Green Lantern costar turned boyfriend, Ryan Reynolds—although Reynolds’ dog, Baxter, made a cameo during our chat, suggesting perhaps that his dashing owner was upstairs waiting. Here, a little bit of girl talk—and a real glimpse of the actress.
I’ll be honest, it’s hard to believe that you don’t have a stylist. Is there an adviser, friend, anybody who helps you?
My assistant will call fashion houses for me, but I always pick the outfit, shoes, jewelry, and a lot of times I do my own hair and makeup for events. Sometimes I think, God, why do I do this to myself? It’s so much extra work!
Gossip Girl is on hiatus until September, when it returns with its sixth and final season. Sob, it’s the end of an era! We’ll miss each and every one of Manhattan’s glitterati, but we can’t imagine life without Chuck (Ed Westwick) and his swaggerific suits. Need we remind you of the time he rocked a red onesie?
Chuck is a total fashionister, but his off-screen alter-ego, Ed Westwick, has a slightly more “rock and roll” vibe — especially when it comes to his body ink. “My favorite tattoo would have to be my American eagle feather on the back of my left arm,” he tells Grungy Gentleman. “To me, it sort of represents Native American culture and spirituality, as well as American freedom.”
Chuck might not approve of Ed’s freedom tats, but one thing they have in common? Shipping Chair! Ed seems pretty convinced that our favorite dream team will get back together during Gossip Girl’s final season. “I mean I’m sure they’re going to give it the fairy tale ending the series deserves,” he says. “Hopefully, Blair [Leighton Meester] and Chuck will end up together. I would like it to end that way. But as to how, I am not sure how I want to see it happen.”
So, what does Ed have up his distressed leather sleeves now that Gossip Girl is coming to a close? “I’m just going to go back to chilling and then preparing to get back to work,” he says. “Hopefully I’ll have some big, interesting things to announce really soon.”
Fingers crossed that he’s coming out with a cologne line. We need to smell like him!
With a new movie out, an album in the works and another season of Gossip Girl to wrap, Leighton Meester drops the Blair Waldorf persona we know and love to reveal someone even better: a wisecracking, food-loving sweetheart with a wee best friend and a glamorous solution for bedhead.
Leighton Meester has been to the top of the Empire state Building twice—once to the walled-in tourists-only Observation Deck, and once to the very, very top, where, she reports, there are these really low ledges, and you just stand there and take in the view while holding on to hooks.
“You mean: You, the sky and give or take 1,250 feet between your head and the pavement?” I ask.
“It’s unbelievable!” she insists.
Happily for me, today we’re only headed to the Observation Deck. It’s a clear, sunny afternoon, and we’re tooling around Manhattan visiting the sites of several famous only-in-New York movie scenes. Our itinerary might be a little gimmicky—Iconic New York Actress Pays Homage to Previous Iconic New York Actresses—but Meester doesn’t seem to mind and has come dressed for the job in a loose gray Isabel Marant sweatshirt, J Brand skinny jeans (“More like jeggings,” she jokes), dark hair tucked inside an Autumn Cashmere floppy knit hat (“My hair is a rat’s nest when I wake up—but I slip this thing on and people think it’s a fashion statement!”), black flats (“In case we end up walking a lot”). Picture her Gossip Girl alter ego Blair Waldorf kidnapped from the Upper East Side, deported to the East Village and forced to shop at Urban Outfitters.
Which, as it happens, is a step up from Meester’s pre-Waldorf self. “My friend says that before the show I dressed like a homeless person,” she says. “I used to buy everything at garage sales. It was hard to give up! I’d be like, ‘But this crazy sweater is amazing, and it only cost 25 cents!’ ” Waldorf’s influence hasn’t turned her into a fashionista by any stretch—off-hours, Meester is the low-key, comfort-first type who does most of her shopping online or when traveling, and she only uses a stylist for red-carpet events. “I’ve learned from Blair, though. Now I like to pepper in something designer”—she tugs at her Isabel Marant sweatshirt—“with my usual stuff.”
Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively: Unofficially Engaged?
Apparently there has been a bit of a snafu in the eight month relationship between sweethearts Ryan Reynolds, 35, and Blake Lively, 24.
The pair has been seen everywhere lately. They’ve been spotted holding hands in New York just a few blocks away from their new Bedford country home, and in Canada having dinner with Reynolds’ family. Well, now it looks like there’s some trouble in paradise.
It’s obvious that Lively and Reynolds are getting serious, and sources tell Star that the couple are unofficially engaged. However, if Ryan’s mother Tammy has it her way, they could be heading for a split. According to a source, the Gossip Girl actress wound up storming away during a visit after a confrontation with Reynolds’ mother.
The same source has gone on to tell the magazine that “Tammy thinks Blake is pressuring Ryan to settle down before he’s ready.” The source continues, “He rushed into his first marriage with Scarlett Johansson.” Even though Tammy isn’t too happy with Blake, she is insisting that the couple settle in Ryan’s hometown of Vancouver, “She says when they have kids, Blake and Ryan should raise them in Canada because it’s safer,” says the source.
However, Blake who films her television show Gossip Girl in New York “refuses to even consider that, saying that she has to be in New York for work.”
As for Ryan not being ready to settle down, in May of 2011 Reynolds gave an interview to Details magazine and has this to say about dating, “It just seems so kind of alien to me at this point. I’ve been in relationships pretty much since high school. Some people look at that as a good thing. I think wiser people might see that as a house of cards.”
Do you think Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively will stand the test of time?
